Company Profile

Function

IMEA's primary function is to provide wholesale electricity to its participants, which they re-sell on the retail market. IMEA is made up of 33 electric systems served under a full-requirements wholesale purchasing contract. The IMEA's goal is to keep power costs low and to be insulated from the high prices that are increasingly common in the short-term power market.

Additional Services

In addition to its primary power supply function, IMEA also provides engineering, communications and economic development services. These include engineering consultation, state and federal legislative lobbying, load retention and new business location services, and various communication programs.

Governance

A board of directors, with one director representing each community governs the IMEA. The board members are appointed by the mayors and confirmed by the individual municipal governing bodies. An executive board is elected annually from the full board. The executive board's job is to review policies and make recommendations to the full board for its consideration. A professional staff handles day-to-day operations.

Eligibility and Costs

Participants must be electric utilities which own and operate their own electric generation and/or distribution system. Participation requires an act of the applicant's council, and approval of the IMEA board.
